Coaching for Performance
Sir John Whitmore
This book,
now in its third edition, is effectively the ‘industry standard’ of
coaching books and introduces the G R O W Model from which many of the
current models of coaching have been adapted. Much of what has come to
be known as professional business coaching came from Timothy Gallwey*
and Sir John Whitmore's sports coaching techniques. Based on the context
of awareness and accountability through effective questioning and active
listening this book is a practical and straightforward guide to business
coaching.
Sir John quickly questions the format of ‘traditional management’ and
opens the door to a coaching ethos that encourages individuals to learn
rather than be dictated to. Quite a turnaround for the budding
manager/coach! The following chapters however put the idea into
practice and offer practical solutions to real situations in the form of
coaching session dialogues.
The G R O W model of coaching is introduced - Goal, Reality, Option,
Will - as a format for coaching sessions and each heading is given a
dedicated chapter to explore and practice.
The book covers practical aspects of coaching such as Effective
Questioning and Sequence of Questioning, Coaching in Corporations and
Coaching Teams. Further chapters offer insight into Learning and
Motivation to aid the coach in their pursuit of results for individual
clients as well as covering Benefits and Barriers to Coaching.
This third edition also includes chapters on Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
and Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) as they become widely acknowledged as
significant to performance.
Whilst I believe that the intended audience of this book was once
managers, it is a valuable resource for any coach embarking on
management or executive coaching. It is also a fabulous reference book
for any research or articles and is never far from my grasp!
