Dealing Confidently With Parents

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this workshop, staff will be able to:

·        Know what they need from their communication with parents and understand the importance of Outcome Thinking and Behavioural Flexibility

·        Be able to put themselves in the shoes of the parent to better understand their needs and create a ‘win/win’ outcome

·        Be able to give and receive feedback in a peer environment

·        Ask questions and work through any specific issue they have in their communication with parents with the Coach/Trainer

·        Understand the influence that you have on the children in your care

·        Identify your strengths as a care giver

  • Be able to motivate yourself and feel confident in the workplace

 

Course Outline

·        Introduction

·        Outcome Thinking and Behavioural Flexibility

o       Introduction to Outcome Thinking and Behavioural Flexibility

o       Setting Well Formed Outcomes for ourselves

o       What do you need to know to create a ‘win/win’ situation?

o       Exercise to illustrate

·        Perceptual Positions

o       Introducing the NLP Techniques of ‘Perceptual Positions’ to gain a greater understanding of the parent’s point of view

o       Roleplay of typical parent/nursery practitioner scenarios to test new skills in pairs

·        Break

·        Feedback

o       Introducing the ‘Feedback Sandwich’

o       Understanding how to give and receive feedback from peers

·        Workshop Exercises and Feedback

o       Workshop exercises utilising real-life nursery scenarios where new skills can be tested

o       Roleplaying in groups of 3, one plays parent, one is nursery practitioner and the other is in an observational role providing feedback

o       Switching roles and situations ensures empathy for each role and the chance to test new learning immediately

·        Any questions?

o       Opportunity to work through any specific issues with the Coach/Trainer and ask questions

·        Round Up

o       Self reflection exercise to facilitate the individual putting new learning and experience into practice

o       Self reflection exercise also reminds individual the influence that they have on the children in their care

o       Builds motivation and confidence in new skills

o       Brings together the learning and the application of this learning into the workplace
