Infection Control

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this workshop, staff will be able to:

·        Define Infection and Infection Control and have knowledge of relevant legislation

·        Identify sources of infection, how infection is spread and how to reduce the risk

·        Demonstrate the correct technique for effective hand washing and have knowledge of good hygiene practice, including personal hygiene

·        Recognise signs and symptoms of common infections and know the steps to take to ensure good infection control

·        Be aware of the potential dangers associated with food coming into the nursery from sources outwith their control

·        Be aware of the potential dangers associated with contact with pets by both staff and children

·        Understand the principles of good practice and hygiene with regard to potty cleaning, toilet training and toileting hygiene for children

·        Understand the principles of good practice in relation to safe waste handling and disposal including relevant legislation

Understanding will be verified by a short quiz and assessment by the trainer throughout the session and a Certificate of Competency will be awarded to delegates.


Course Outline

·         What is infection?

o        definition of infection and infection control.

o         How infection is spread and what we can do to reduce spread. 

o        Look at how this is relevant to nursery and involve staff in generating solutions. 

o        Brief reminder of Health and Safety at Work and RIDDOR.

·         Chain of infection and how to break it

o         describe chain of infection with relevance to workplace, sources of infection and how to reduce the risk.

o        Can include using risk assessments.

·         Hand hygiene

o        principles of and reminder of correct technique (staff participation!)

o         Use of gloves and aprons – when and where and good practice with regard to use.

o        Reminder of dangers of cross infection. 

o        Latex sensitivity – signs and symptoms, what to do! 

·         Personal hygiene

o        principles of personal hygiene for both staff and children. 

o        Includes considerations of contact with pets by both staff and children.

·         Important infections in children

o        conjunctivitis, impetigo/scabies, head lice, hand foot & mouth, MRSA, diahorrea & vomiting, TB, mumps measles & rubella, coughs colds and sniffles.  (can be amended as appropriate) 

o        use pictures and involve staff in identifying various common conditions. 

o        Reminder of signs, symptoms and how to deal with different illnesses and infections,  including managing/controlling outbreaks

·         Bringing food into the nursery

o        danger of cross infection and brief discussion of how this may affect children in the nursery.

·         Cleaning Practice

o         including cleaning rota, potty cleaning, toilet training considerations and good practice when toileting children

·         Disposal of waste

o         disposal of nappies and other potentially infective material. 

o        Clinical waste.

o         Environmental Protection legislation, COSHH.

o         

·         Case studies

o        staff in groups to come up with ideas/solutions to various scenarios.
